The postmark of Liverpool, which is the second oldest of Britain, may fade away from most of the mails that are posted in the city.

The Liverpool’s postmark has more than 300 years of history and it is going to end in the month of October, when the last Liverpool sorting office, which is in the Copperas Street, will be closed by the Royal Mail by sending all the letters through Warrington.

Only the businesses can carry on using the old postmark, which frank their own letters.

In order to retain the postmark, the Communication Workers Union have made an effort to talk to the Royal Mail by saying that this mark is an important part of the city’s history as a major port.

Mark Walsh, Liverpool branch secretary has expressed that “for over the centuries, Liverpool has been good to the Royal Mail by putting up a most of the businesses and it is disheartening that it is unable to see the importance of this mark.”

“We have declared in the month of august 2008” said a spokeswoman from the Royal Mail, “that, as a part of a reorganization of the operational infrastructure in the NW of England, the processing of mail from Liverpool Mail Centre will be relocated to Warrington and this included consultations with the union and staff for several months.”

“At the new Warrington Mail Centre, all the mails will be processed having a Warrington postmark as it is an operational tool which recognizes the mail centre where an item was processed, not the place in which it was posted.”
